I am planning on planting some wine grapes next spring. I was going to space my rows 8 feet apart and space the vines 8 feet apart.

I wanted to know if that was a good enough number?

Can I plant them closer like......6 feet? Would that have a negative effect.

I live in the east bay of northern California....hot dry summers with some good winds and some frost in the winter.

Not sure which varities would do well either...any suggestions??

I had read the magic number was 10 ft. I am researching for same thing and reason. I don't think the spacing is that detrimental to the vine but is more to give it room to grow and leave us room to work them. The winery I toured a little while back theirs were further apart I think the reason for this is to drive a tractor between them. So I don't think the difference in 10 and 8 foot is enough to mater but to be able to at least drive a lawn mower through them I think 6 foot is a little close.
