hey there Back in Australia, screw top bottles were just about all I used for my home brews. People here in the USA warn me against using them - risk of poor or no seal, and therefore no carbonation.
I tried a single screwtop amongst my last brew, and it popped opened nicely with a tight, crisp release of gas, and the beer was carbonated.
What`s the deal - seams OK to me?? I can`t imagine there`s a vast difference between screw top bottles between here and back home...
Anybody else in the USA use them with no trouble?

I haven`t used screwtops, however, I have used non returnables that have the regular caps on them. I`ve been told that they may explode, but haven`t had one yet. In fact, I`ve been drinking a lot of Sam Adams, Warsteiner, Bass Ale and Red Stripe lately in part just to build up my bottle supply. Allan Koeberlin II

The problem with screw caps are that they are thinner in the capping and neck area. If you`re careful it won`t be a problem, but you risk breaking the bottle during the capping process. Could be bottles are thicker down under or you`re just a good capper.

Modern screw-top bottles are usually designed for artificially carbonated drinks which wouldn`t increase in pressure once bottled. Using these is slightly mroe risky, but should be OK providing they`re kept somewhere cool. Personally I don`t use them and prefer to use bottle-conditioned beer bottles with crown caps, if I run out of the screw stopper ones above.

Sweeeeet - this one`s a winner! This is what I was hoping to hear from somebody! So I gather I will be safe in using screw top soft drink bottles, eg Root Beer, as long as 1. I am careful in capping, using minimal pressure to apply the crown seal, and 2. make sure fermentation has finished before bottling.
Am I to understand that there is a feeling of safety then, with regard to the glass being strong enough for bottle carbonation, as long as said carbonation is standard, and not `enhanced` by excess sugar, caused by point 2. above, or by priming too heavily?

I only helped him fill the buggers. In retrospect, we should have both realised that if the beer tasted sweet it was not ready for bottling.
And in my defence, I offered to stick them in the boot instead of the back seat
How is the yeastmobile anyway?

I`ve been using screw-cap 750ml glass bottles for years, using a lever-capper and the cheapest crown-seal caps I can get ( I reckon the cheaper ones are thinner therefore gentler, no proof, just opinion). Never had an explosion, nor a breakage during capping. (Over 200 bottlings)
Lately I`ve also been using brown plastic bottles with screw caps also in black plastic. They are 740ml, and very handy, but unstable because of the design of the base and a damn nuisance in the fridge. (Over 30 bottlings)
Brew tastes fine though.

Only if you use the hammer type capers. I have always used twist tops with a bench caper and never broken one.
