Hi all, newbie here,
Are twist off bottles suitable for recapping? Do I need a special capper? thanks in advance, Harry

twist-offs are evil and should be avoided at all costs, go for a poptop any day, gotta keep bottle opener companies in business somehow

I agree with GD, there is absolutely nothing wrong with using twist tops, ok you have to use a little more force but that doesn`t make any difference.
Personally I have been using them for a while now since the crown seals one`s have been all used up, not a single problem.

Forgot to mention.
When I go here there is a capper which just does crown seals and another does both crown seals and twist top.
The combo capper I paid about $60 AUD.

I use disposable (twist off) bottles and have not had a problem with them. I use a two handle capper, not a bench capper, and normal crown caps. The bottles I use come from Yuengling Breweries, and have a similar shape to returnable (pop top) bottles. They are not quite as heavy or thick and the neck is just a bit shorter than standard 12 ounce returnable bottles. I think (IMO) that if you were to try recapping the tapered type of disposable bottles (Budweiser shape) you would need a bench capper. There isn`t much of a neck on them for a two handle capper to grip on. But I`ve never tried them, so can`t say for sure.
Put on a twist off bottle, crown caps will twist off. It takes a bit more force than most of the commercial breweries caps though, so I use an opener to pop them open any way. For Barleywines, and anything else like that that I plan to bottle age for longer than normal times, I still use returnable bottles. The glass tends to be thicker, and darker brown, which lets less light in. I also use Oxygen retardant caps for those. Not sure if it really makes a lot of difference, but that`s the way I do it.
Hope this helps. Mike

How about 32 or 40oz. screwtop quart bottles. Have been using them for a long time and never had a problem. Just breifly boil the screw tops before puting them on. (of course you have to drink the swill out of them first unless you have friends who like swill!)
