I am a first time winemaker and wondering how I can test the alcohol level of my hooch.
(1 gallon of each blueberry, apple and tangerine)
There is something called a vinometer but it is not recommended for sweet wine.
Taking before readings isn't an option because it's almost ready to rack.

I found this posted here before. I think it will help you. I havent tried it but it should work.
"This method measures the alcohol content by volume of any wine,spirit,or beer,using a hydrometer, giving readings as accurate as an ebulliometer used by commercial wineries. The method is based on the research of Dr. William Honneyman,Ph.D."
1.Measure the SG of the wine you wish to test.We will call this figure SG-1.
2.Measure exactly one pint of the wine (500ml).We will call this the sample.
3.In a enamelled or glass pan,boil the sample down to about half it's original volume.This drives off some of the water,but all of the alcohol,because alcohol boils at a lower temperature than water.The sample now consists of water,residual sugar,colouring matter,acids and proteins-that is,all the non-alcoholic constituents of the wine.
4.With distilled water or rain water,make the boiled-down sample up to exactly a pint again.Tap water is not recommended because,in some areas,it has a considerable dissolved mineral content which could affect your results.
5.Cool the sample down to 60o-F, or what ever temperature your hydrometer is calibrated for.
6.Read the SG of the sample,we will call this reading SG-2.You will find it higher than SG-1 because you have removed the alcohol and replaced it with water.
7.Subtract SG-1 from SG-2. The difference is called the Spirit Indication.
8.Read the alcohol strength from the following table.
Spirit Indication---- Alcohol Strength,% by volume

As an example:
SG-1 (SG of oraginal wine) = 0.995
SG-2 (SG of sample at stage 6) =1.011
Spirit Indication= 1.011 - 0.995 = 16
Alcohol strength= 12.3 % by volume.
Buy a short range hydrometer, reading from 0.990 to 1.020. This should let you read SG to half a degree.You can then work out a spirit indication to half a unit and by interpolation on the table reach a closer value for alcohol strength.

Hi I'm currently making a batch of apple cider. But I have a question about measuring the alcohol level.
Can I take 5cl from the finished cider and distillate the alcohol. Than see how much it is from the original 5cl (minus some water that distillated with the alcohol).
Is that a good and easy way to find it out? Because I just want to keep it simple.

I just tried Dr Honeymans method and I believe it's accurate way to check alchol content.
I checked a batch that I knew was above the 22 brix I adjusted my muscadine "must" to - at the start. After primary fermentation I only had 5 gal of juice for my
6 gal carboy so I added a water and sugar mix of 24 brix to fill the carboy.
For the test results I had a SG of .990 for SG 1 and a SG of 1.008 to 1.009 for SG 2 - for a difference of 19 and 18 equaling 14.1% to 15.1 %. Looks dead on to me.
I don't have a short range hydrometer ( .900 - 1.20 )
which may have been more accurate but will try to get one for the future.

take the difference between the two readings and divide it by 7.45. This will give you the percentage.
You could drink a bottle of wine that you know the alcohol level of. And then drink a bottle of your wine. And then compare how you feel.
I was thinking along those lines too...but would advise one not to plan to drive.
You all are so funny, but I say just drink it. All the wine that I have made...if it has tasted good then its a good wine!
This is by far the best answer as the only way i know without analyzing the liquid itself in a lab, would be to get a hydrometer reading before and after fermentation, then compare the two.
Now, can someone elaborate on how to compare the hydrometer readings of a known wine to the readings of the unknown wine.

This thread is interesting because I just started making my own kombucha and am curious what (if any) the alcohol content is. I brought some to work with me and offered it to my co-worker who said "how much of that do I drink to get drunk?" In a joking manner of course. That had me thinking. I was bringing it to work like a non-alcoholic beverage but now I'm second guessing myself.

Is there is any machine to check alcohol if somebody drink alcohol how can we know that a guy had drink alcohol
From reading the question about a machine to check if someone has drank alcohol I can tell you I'm sure a machine(breathalizer) is probably used but a straight urine test and they(government ,cops what have you)can tell if you had drank 3 days ago(which is much longer then the alcohol being in you system).I'm not sure if I understood question correctly but if not there is a useless fact. (I nned to stop answering questions when I'm buzzing lol,i don't even understand my answer or the question for that matter))
