hi there my name is chris and I also have one of the black and white bottles that looks very old and has the funny top to it. On the neck It reads "by appointment to her majesty the queen" then under that it reads "scotch whiskey distillers james buchanan & co., ltd". The main label reads Product of Scotland BLACK & WHITE special blends of Buchanan's choice old scotch whiskey. Then it has his signiture and out to the right of his signiture it has thre letters that are in script that I can't make out and under it, it says "limited". Under that it then reads " Scotch whiskey distillers Glasgow & London. under that it reads Glentauchers distillery, mulben, speyside. Thats all on front. Then on the back dead center it has the label with the two dogs. Underneath that one a smaller label it reads " distilled and bottled in scotland under british gonverment supervision. On the bottom of the bottle it has numbers and letters. Ill put type them exactly as it reads
SB284
N 4
U G B

Could you PLEASE help me gain more knowledge about this bottle that I have for NOBODY seems to have answers lol. Thanks so much. Chris

Chris,

I have a few of this same bottle, and from what you've described in the labels, it was made sometime between 1953 & 1961.

I can probably narrow that date down a bit more if I could see a few clear photos of the Front Label, Top & Neck of the bottle.

The "three letters" you refered to after the signature, are actually a very elaborate script and reads "Co."

The bottle marks on the bottom show that the bottle was made by Union Glass Bottlers, and was produced on machine #4.

If you need further help, you can contact me directly at <email> .

Chris,

Got it...Good Photos!

Your bottle is in excellant condition on both Fill-level & Label condition. (Unusual to see one without tax stamps but they sometimes do fall off after 10-20 years.)

You bottle has 3 important bit of information in the labeling & closure that help me to date your bottle.

The "Spring-Cap" lid with the white "lead" seal indicate this was made before 1961.

Your bottle also had a "Shoulder Label" bearing the Royal Warrant for Queeen Elizabeth - This was issued to
Buchanan's in 1955. (Later bottles will have this information on the main label.)

Your main label describes this as "Choice Old Scotch Whisky", rather than "Blended Scotch Whisky", indicating this was made before 1959.

What is missing from the labeling altogether is the "Proof marking" & content weight.

From the information we've been able to glean from your bottle, it looks like we have narrowed it down to between
1955-1957.

As for Valuation of this bottle, alot depends on the market; which can vary widely up & down in a year, and what country it's being sold.

Black & White is not a highly sought after whisky, but there are some collectors like myself that simply want to collect every version of a bottle known to exist.

For the most part, a "Spring-Cap" sealed bottle of Black & White in similar condition & age sells for about $50-$80 in the US, and about $90-$130 in the UK.

An almost identicle bottle in Germany sold last Jan for 67 Euros (US $82).

Hope that's helpfull for you! (If you want to sell it, email me and we'll talk about it.)

Cheers,
Walter

hey walter thanks for the information it was a lot of help. I am glad to know the value and year. I have one last question (although i will never crack the seal) what does it taste like? is it any good? required taste? mellow? smooth? harsh? rough? Or is it like many other scotch whiskies and tastes better the older it gets?

Chris,

Actually Black & White is a rather poor drinking whisky in my opinion...I've had several vintages, and none of them were very good - Rather harsh in the taste, though I have a buddy that left one open a few days and said it got "somewhat" better after breathing.

As for the "collecting" side of it, I doubt it will ever get better than now in price, but there ar a few of us that collect them simply to complete sets of bottles.

Your bottle for this dating is a bit better condition than 2 others I have, so I would probably be interested in it (if it was for sale) simply to 'upgrade' my own bottles...eventurally I'd find a begining collector to sell my lesser versions to.

If you ever want to let it go, let me know and we'll talk about it!

Cheers,
Walter C Hurst

Hello, I recently purchased about 200 or so unopened bottles of whiskey with a few misc. liqueurs and such. All dated between 1940 and 1966. I'd say about 90% are whiskey, some single malt, blended, straight bourbon, etc........ Any help with its value or contacting someone to buy the whole lot would be appreciated.. Thanks, Duane I can send pics if your interested, You can call or <phone> For pics and info

Rodrigo,

Your bottle of Black & White was issued under a Royal Warrant from Queen Elizabeth II, which places the age of the bottle to some point after 1955 when QEII issued her Royal Warrants.

The labels also indicate a weight of 26 1/2 oz, but no Proof markings, which is indicative of bottles produced prior to 1957 for the UK market; the usage of the term "Choice Old Scotch Whisky" was also only used for bottles meant for the UK market.

My most accurate estimate for the age of this bottle puts it's manufacture between 1955-1956 - At a good bottle auction, this would be valued for about $80-$100 USD.

Cheers,
Walter

Rodrigo,

Unfortunately I'm not in the market for acquiring any bottles at this time...though it is one that I would normally consider making an offer on!

If you are interested in selling this, look up James Ely (http://www.drinksplanet.com/members/james) on this site and contact him directly....James & I have done alot of business over the past 6-8 years, and he's both an active & honest buyer!

Cheers,
Walter

I have a black and white bottle of whisky with grolsch type lid. It is full and does appear to have been opened. It is a miniature. The label is discoloured from age. The bottle is green. Is it a collectible or of value? Happy to supply photo for further advice or information.

Nik,

Depending on the age of the bottle, you mini Black & White can be worth between $10-$30 USD.

The Grolsch-type lid you described is called a Spring-cap, and was used on Black & White bottles from 1929-1965.

Much of the dating information on your bottle would be contained in the labels...if you could provide photos of
any labels & tax stamps, I would certainly be willing to help you locate the correct dating for this bottle!

Cheers,
Walter C Hurst
